1. I’d love your help!

Those of you who read my last H*O*T 5 might know that one of my new year's resolutions is to really work to drill down on how H*O*T can provide you with more of what you want. To that end, I have a little questionnaire that I would truly appreciate your answering. In advance, I'm extremely grateful for your help! And, to say thank you, you can get $10 off any future order for participating. Here’s a link to the brief questionnaire.

2. Kamala Harris Vogue Cover Controversy

I'm sure most of you are aware of the uproar over the February American Vogue cover featuring Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris since it seems every news outlet has covered the story. There is a digital cover of her in a blue suit which I believe is much better than the newsstand cover. Though it might seem like we have more important things to concern ourselves with these days I can understand how this one got everyone's attention. I have to agree with those criticizing the photo. IMHO it was poorly executed and a tremendous missed opportunity considering the magnitude of the occasion -- the first woman and first woman of color to hold the position of VP of the United States of America. Some have argued that it shows her in a casual and relaxed light which is modern and fresh. However, I think she just looks uncomfortable and not at her best which isn't befitting her status or Vogue's reputation. What do you think? Here are 2 articles from The Washington Post and The New York Times for more input.

3. The Biggest Jewelry Trends for SS '21

The jewelry category hasn't received much love this year. Other than a cool chain to hold your mask (yay Maskeraides!) you probably haven't really paid much attention to what the must-haves are for jewelry in Spring/Summer '21. Since jewelry is my jam I want to share these new trends for the season with you. I'm excited because I'll be featuring lots of examples of these new designs on the site and you can even find a few already on the site that express the vibe of these trends. And click here to read a helpful article from whowhatwear about how to get back in the jewelry groove after months of quarantine.

Talisman Pieces -- Go for self-expression along with a little protection; Chain Chain Chain -- The chain gang is here to stay, the bigger and bolder the better!; Tiny Bag Necklaces -- Now we just need an iPhone that will fit in these; Pearls Please -- Kamala keeps pearls in the #musthave column but make them fun; Jewelry for men -- Blame it on Henry Styles, he of the single pearl earring; Beach Beads -- A great look for the summer holiday we're all dreaming of; Textured Metals -- An ancient technique that looks ultra-modern; Silver Linings -- Silver sure looks cool after so much gold.

4. Pat McGrath Is Mother

Respectfully and lovingly called Mother by her legions of fans and followers, Pat has been in the news a lot lately. She's quite possibly the world's best-known makeup artist responsible for incredible catwalk looks since the 90s. Not only was she made Dame Pat McGrath by the Queen in 2020, therefore, being the 1st makeup artist to receive this honor, but she's also the founder of her own line of genius cosmetics that sell out in seconds once "dropped". I've actually spent time with her when she worked with us on Cover Girl for many years. She was always incredibly entertaining and an amazing storyteller, very aware of how far she'd come in the world. I loved hearing about her mother's fashion obsession and influence on her as a child. She even did my makeup once and of course, it was beyond glamorous! You can read all about Mother here.

5. Read This Book!

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett was recently given to me by a very good friend whose choices in literature never fail to line up with mine. She was correct once again as I loved this award-winning book! Author Britt Bennett has written a gorgeously lyrical and mesmerizing book about African American twins growing up in the south and the life-changing choices they made. One twin decides to "pass" for white and the fallout from this decision lasts a lifetime. I remember in my own childhood hearing whispers about members of my extended family that made this choice and I'll never forget the mystery and shame that swirled around these conversations that I didn't really understand. This book will stay with you long after you finish it.

Terry xoxo
