HOT 5 - 11/11/21
Hello my HOT Friends,
Do you feel as I do that once we're done with Halloween, suddenly it's New Year's Eve? At least it seems that way. This year with the fear of supply chain issues spurring a mad rush for holiday products, it feels like Christmas is next week! And it certainly doesn't help that 2021 has Hanukkah making an appearance at the end of Thanksgiving weekend! Don't you worry though, we'll get through it all with flying colors and I'll do my best to help. Keep watching this space.
This week's HOT 5:
1. More About Conscious Consuming
2. HOT Pick -- Faire Isle Sweaters
3. That Old Seasonal Closet Swap
4. What's HOT In Beauty
5. Two Movies About Fashion That I Can't Wait To See
1. More About Conscious Consuming
In my last HOT 5, I shared some thoughts on the importance of shopping thrift, vintage and pre-owned. I also mentioned that I was looking forward to the Manhattan Vintage Show which happened last weekend. I'd like to report back that the show exceeded all expectations! I went with Alice, my intrepid partner in vintage crime pictured above. We saw racks and racks of amazing vintage fashion, high energy happy-to-be-shopping again people, and brand new vintage vendors from all over the US. I was instantly inspired to add new pieces of vintage jewelry to the site which you can check out below. (I was also inspired to get back into the vintage and pre-owned clothing biz but that's for another HOT 5:)
2. HOT Pick -- Faire Isle Sweaters
This week's HOT Pick is the lovely Faire Isle sweater. For me they communicate instant winter coziness and fond memories of childhood. Did you know that Faire Isle is an actual island? It's located north of Scotland in the Shetland archipelago in a very remote area with a population of only 55 permanent residents! A few of them still produce gorgeous Faire Isle sweaters but good luck trying to get one! There's a waiting list for an authentic Faire Isle sweater about a mile long. Luckily there are loads of new and vintage examples in every color combination and print iteration imaginable. Take a look at these fabulous examples that I've chosen.
3. That Old Seasonal Closet Swap
Can you guess how I know global warming is real? Every year I find myself swapping out my summer closet later and later in the season! I used to do it in mid-Oct. and now it's creeping into November. In fact, I just finished the brutal job. What a great feeling it is to have that behind me! A couple of years ago I shared my top tips for approaching the task of seasonal closet cleaning and organizing and this is a good time as any to reshare these 9 tips.
4. What's HOT In Beauty
It's been a while since I've shared any of my new favorites in beauty. Believe me, that's not because the beauty pipeline has slowed down any. Every day I read about a new beauty product that I can't wait to try. Here are a few that I've either tried in the last month or plan to try soon:
Hermes Nail Polish -- All you need to know is that this nail polish is made by Hermes. And at $46 a bottle, it better be exceptional. The colors are intense and gorgeous and the bottle is a little work of art. It would make a very special gift.
Bare Hands The Dry Gloss Manicure Kit -- At the other end of the nail polish spectrum is the Dry Gloss Manicure Kit that gives you nourished conditioned cuticles and a pretty natural shine. Who doesn't want that? This product gets incredible customer reviews too.
NudeStix Nudies Blush -- I was super impressed with this blush product when I tried it in store. It's a matte cream stick with a buffing brush on the other end and goes on soft and natural looking. Now if I can only get my hands on it! Made by the incredibly popular Nude Stix brand, stores are having a hard time keeping it in stock.
Saie Slip Tint With SPF -- I've been aware of this brand of tinted moisturizer for a while now as its beautiful ads are all over Instagram. Finally tried it and it's a definite yes from me. Gorgeous glowy color that smells good, is full of vitamins and has an SPF of 30, what's not to like?
5. Two Movies About Fashion That I Can't Wait To See
This month I'm very excited about two movies that take place in the world of fashion. Coming this Thanksgiving is the long awaited House of Gucci directed by Ridley Scott and starring Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, and many more. Check out the trailer here . The second film is called Quant and is all about the designer Mary Quant (this is a great review of her life from the Guardian) who revolutionized fashion in the swinging 60s. You can watch the trailer for the movie here but unfortunately there's no release date yet for the US.
