HOT 5 - 2/5/22
Hello HOT friends,
For the year's shortest month, February sure has a lot going on! It began with Chinese New Year on Feb.1st, then everyone's favorite, Valentine's Day falls in the middle, the fashion shows for ready-to-wear and couture happen, and of course, the entire month is Black History Month. I'm always happy to see February come for all of those reasons and because we're getting that much closer to spring! Here's this week's HOT 5:
1. Year of The Tiger
2. For Your HOT Valentine
3. This Week's HOT Pick
4. It's Black History Month!
5. A Little More Black History
1. Year of The Tiger
Many of you know that I lived in Singapore for almost 7 years in the 90s. Some of my favorite memories are those of celebrating the Chinese New Year also known as the Lunar New Year during the 1st quarter of every year. It's a holiday equal to Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's all rolled into one. I was entranced by the decorations, dragon dances, and most of all the food. This year we welcome the year of the tiger, which according to Chinese astrologers will bring hope, change, and movement to 2022, all traits we could really use! Do you know your animal according to the Chinese zodiac? There are 12 of them and they are based on the year you were born. Check this to see what this year holds in store for you and a very happy tiger everyone!
2. For Your HOT Valentine
Do you still have a few special Valentines that you need gifts for? Or maybe the holiday is a great excuse to gift yourself a little something? Nothing wrong with that! Whatever your gift needs, look no further than right here at House of Terrance. Sure you could give flowers or candy to your Valentines this year but don't you know that deep down they really want jewelry? We have lots to choose from, heart-themed or just pretty, colorful pieces that will add some spice to any wardrobe. Here are a few for you to peruse and consider:
3. This Week's HOT Pick
Scarves have always been a favorite accessory of mine going back to when I first moved to Paris in 1987 and learned that every French woman seemed to know exactly how to tie one. I've been an avid scarf wearer ever since. This time of year it's gray and cold out and you're probably sick to death of the hat, coat, and glove combo you've been wearing non-stop for weeks. This is the time to add some spice to your look with a warm and colorful scarf, one that hints at spring but knows we still have weeks to go (6 more weeks according to that pesky groundhog who saw his shadow Wed.) Check out the scarves I've chosen for you below:
4. It's Black History Month!
Black History Month gives us all the opportunity to learn more about a culture that's had an outsize influence on our world but hasn't always received the attention and respect it demands. And that is precisely why we need at least a month to demonstrate that. Black Americans' contributions to America and the world at large have been huge and touch on every aspect of life, none more so than style, so I am delighted to share this compilation by well-known veteran fashion reporter Constance C.R. White. Thanks to my good friend and HOT reader Yvonne Durant for sharing it with me! And be on the lookout for a sneak peek of Yvonne's soon-to-be-released memoir, entitled Quite the Contrary -- On Life, Work, and Loving Miles Davis. I can't wait to read it!
5. A Little More Black History
It's no secret how much I admire the poet Amanda Gorman. Having already made history (Black and otherwise) for being the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, she was also the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate. I've been blown away by her exquisite words and delivery and so I'd like to share here the recent editorial she wrote for the NY Times. Like her poetry, it is beautifully written and her message about the importance of owning your fear really resonated with me. I continue to be awed by the incredible wisdom of someone so young and I look forward to reading many more of her piercing and poignant words.
Enjoy the month!
Terry xoxo
