HOT 5 - 3/31/21
Hello HOT Friends,
It's the last day of what has been a really tough month. A month that saw 2 terrifying mass shootings including one that horrifically highlighted the continued struggle of Asian Americans against racial hatred. Add to that the frustration of seeing the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel but not being there quite yet and it's hard to feel hopeful, for our country or our health. Maybe April will start to bring us out of this immense sadness we're all feeling, hopefully. Meanwhile, why not get in touch with someone you haven't spoken with in a while and find out how they're doing? Also here are some great ways to support our AAPI friends and neighbors.
This week's HOT 5:
1. Why We Love Vintage Jewelry (And Why You Should Too!)
2. Isn't It Time To Consider a Capsule Wardrobe?
3. Best Quarantine Beauty Discoveries
4. Spring Perfumes That Sound Like They Smell Great!
5. Have You Read These Books By Inspiring Women?
1. Why We Love Vintage Jewelry (And Why You Should Too!)
Have you heard the term re-commerce yet? It defines the biggest movement we've experienced in the world of fashion in many, many years. Upcycling, vintage shopping, re-sale, and thrifting are all components of re-commerce and it's a market that's predicted to be $64 billion by 2024! I've been a committed re-commerce shopper for many years and I'd like to encourage those of you that aren't yet to consider it. Buying vintage jewelry is a great way to start. I love vintage jewelry for the history, the stories, and of course for the satisfaction of buying what is most likely a one-of-a-kind piece. And it doesn't hurt that it checks the sustainability box. Here's a great article on vintage jewelry trends to pique your interest. And remember many of these trends are well represented right here on HOT so do check out the vintage tab where we have lots of newness for you.
2. Isn't It Time to Consider a Capsule Wardrobe?
I've always loved the idea of creating a perfectly timeless, wearable capsule wardrobe and if this past year has taught us anything it's that we all could use some fine-tuning when it comes to our wardrobes. Haven't we learned that we can get along just fine with about a quarter of what's in our closets? Of course, we realize that we will slowly come out of hibernation at some point in the near future and need clothes again but we really got used to the ease of simplified dressing, of the pleasure of being truly comfortable as we worked and played. This article from Refinery 29 has some great recommendations to help us build a useful yet still chic capsule wardrobe.
3. Best Quarantine Beauty Discoveries
I enjoyed this recent article from Vogue editors on their best quarantine beauty discoveries. I was curious to see if my picks made their list but alas they were all new to me and of course, I found several I'm eager to try. I was inspired to share my discoveries with you though and I can't recommend them enough! The first is NeuBrow Brow Enhancer and I am still amazed that this actually worked! I've never noticed any difference when I've used these types of products in the past but after about 3 weeks I had thicker fuller brows, incredible! Next is Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint which I bought when looking for something lighter than foundation since I wasn't doing full-on makeup this past year. It has a super lightweight, gorgeous, glowy finish and an SPF of 40 so what's not to love? My last discovery is The Inkey List's Caffeine Eye Cream which really works a little magic on puffy eyes and at $9.99 is a major bargain, right?
4. Spring Perfumes That Sound Great!
Every spring I'm in the mood for a new fragrance. By the time March rolls around I'm totally sick of whatever scent I've been wearing all winter long. This spring I'm particularly keen to find something to totally sweep out all the bad vibes of the past year. I want something I've never smelled before, something strange and dazzling that makes me think of exotic locals and all of the fun adventures that I hope will be in my not too distant future. Here are 2 articles with lots of new and interesting sounding fragrance recommendations for this spring. The 1st is from New York Mag's The Cut and the 2nd is from Allure. You're sure to find your perfect new spring fragrance among these!
5. Have You Read These Books by Inspiring Women?
On this last day of Woman's History Month, I want to share this list of books presented by TheSkimm. Do you know about TheSkimm? It's a free daily newsletter geared to female millennials (ok I know I'm a little older than that:) which condenses all the important news stories in an informative and easy-to-read format. It nails "tone of voice" too. It was launched in 2012 by two female former news producers and is now valued at around $55 million. Over the years I have gotten lots of great information from it ranging from an interesting take on top world news stories to the best bras to buy. They always have good book recos too. What I liked about their list is that I actually haven't read any of the books on it but I am truly inspired by every single author. I think you will be too.
Wishing those of you that celebrate a lovely Easter!
Terry xoxo
